Remote Workers & Digital Nomads - How to Relocate

Traveling and living overseas used to mean searching for internet cafes. The rise of Social Media and smartphones has delivered high speed internet access to virtually every corner of the world. For those who grew up on technology, choosing to work remotely from a mobile device or computer has quickly become a way of life.

Once Covid-19 brought about the shelter in place order, the ability to work remotely was no longer just something for early adopters of technology. The entire world had to quickly learn video conferencing and how to send digital files. A lifestyle that used to be reserved for those called Digital Nomads” now applies to just about anyone.

Today, the traditional workplace almost demands remote work and more contract-based projects. Freelance opportunities and the rise of the Gig Economy has led to the creation of even more remote job positions.

The digital era allowed companies to save on office rent, while creating a much bigger employment pool. Online conferencing means that work is no longer restricted by geographic regions, or the need to commute to the workplace. Remote workers are able to save transportation costs and in some cases, ditch their car and decrease their environmental footprint. This has all led to better work-life balance options.

Employees, contractors and freelancers can have more flexibility and are able to access jobs in cities with more job opportunities. Many decide to move to smaller, mountain or traditional resort style neighborhoods in their country of birth. However, there is a growing trend that has enabled remote workers to live in Asia, Central and South America, Portugal, Bulgaria, Italy and virtually any place around the world.

Remote workers have even set out in trailers with their families, traveling and working remotely. Many live close to national parks and isolated nooks as long as the internet access is good.  Over the past five years, this trend has led many remote workers to begin exploring living overseas. I have found that there is a comfortable nook for everyone.

How to Work Remotely from the Place you Love

The number of countries that are attracting Digital Nomads and Remote Workers is growing daily. Many countries are seeing the opportunity to attract foreign citizens and are making the move easier. Perhaps you have visited a place and know a little bit about the possibility of moving there? Maybe your friends have shared social posts of their lifestyle abroad? You may have seen photos of exotic places that call your name?

This is where careful planning and getting the right information is so important. Your first impression may be the right choice, but why not explore through a well-planned adventure and with the guidance that can ensure your move is a success?

These are a few questions we will explore:

  1. What is your budget?
  2. What is the lifestyle you will enjoy?
  3. What is your ideal place to live?
  4. What is the climate that matches your personal comfort?

Answering these questions will help you to narrow down the list of countries and places. Do not forget that in some countries the situation will vary from region to region. After this, it is a matter of collecting more information. Some of it might be boring, but is essential to successfully settling overseas:

  • Is it easy to open a bank account?
  • What is a comfortable living budget for this country?
  • How long can I stay with a visitors visa and what will I need to do?
  • Is it easy to apply for permanent residence in this country?
  • Are there benefits for remaining a temporary resident?

Digital Nomads tend to move around more, and you may not find the perfect spot right away. There may be different countries and locations that will appeal to you later. Making this move is a bold step in the right direction. But making the right choices will define the entire experience.

Each country offers something unique, and I’ll help you identify the best option to relocate for remote work. Below are a few of our favorites:

Relocation Budgets and Lifestyles for Remote Work Overseas

The best part about relocating overseas is that you are able to save quite a bit on your living expenses. The average budget for comfortable living in these countries is 1700 a month. Along with relocation, you can downsize and streamline your assets. Many people find that the experience of moving to your dream destination is very liberating.

Whether you are just out of college and have not settled down, or already have a mortgage and house with financial responsibilities, you can still enjoy a fresh start in a fascinating place.

Perhaps this move might be considered temporary – which can make the move easier. For the vast majority of people, this temporary move has become very long term – they enjoy it that much!

Important Factors for Relocating Abroad

With so many new and exciting changes, it is easy to get disorganized. Try to keep a cool and balanced attitude:

  • Remember that career and job opportunities are very important. Eventually you need to do what’s best for your career. It might require going back home at some point.
  • Owning a property in a tropical place, especially the value you get for your budget is very tempting. But you might eventually need to move on. You have to make sure the property is easy to sell. If you choose to keep it as an income property, it will need to be managed remotely.
  • Do not make major decisions until you have time to look around and set a plan.
  • Our Discovery Tours are a perfect way to explore and connect with the area that is right for you.
