I’ve been to many cities in Mexico this spring as part of my Lifestyle Discovery Tour. I’ve explored the bustling streets of Mexico City, soaked in the vibrant energy of Playa del Carmen, enjoyed architecture of , and revealed in the natural beauty of Cuernavaca. I also spent a few days in Taxco, also known as Taxco de Alarcón, and I was really impressed by the city. It’s a charming place with a lot to offer for the visitors.

Here are a few of the things I loved about Taxco:

  • The silver

Taxco is known as the “Silver City” for good reason. The city has a long history of silver mining, it is renowned for its silver jewelry production, design, and craftsmanship. You can still see evidence of this history all over town. There are silver shops and silversmiths everywhere, and you can even visit the Taxco Silver Museum.

  • The architecture

Taxco is a colonial city, and its architecture is simply stunning. The charming cobblestone streets are lined with whitewashed buildings with red-tiled roofs. There are also a number of churches and cathedrals in Taxco, all of which are worth visiting.

  • The views

Taxco is built in the mountains of Guerrero, so you get amazing views of the surrounding mountains from just about anywhere in the city.

If you’re looking for a charming city with a rich history and stunning views, I highly recommend visiting Taxco. It’s a city that’s sure to capture your heart.

Here are a few additional tips for visiting Taxco:

Visit the Taxco Silver Museum

Before exploring the museum, they took us to this cozy Mexican restaurant on the second floor. The restaurant was great, and the food didn’t disappoint either! After experiencing the flavors of Taxco’s culinary heritage, the tour began.

The museum has a number of exhibits on the history of silver in Taxco, from its pre-Hispanic origins to the present day. It also has a number of workshops where you can see silversmiths at work and learn about the different techniques used to create silver jewelry.

Just as we thought the tour was about to come to an end, we were in for a surprise – tequila was waiting for us! To toast the amazing journey we had just experienced, they handed each of us a glass of tequila. Then, with our spirits high, they guided us to the jewelry store which is located just before the museum exit.

It seems the Taxco Silver Museum has a secret weapon to make you say “yes” to silver: they serve you a delicious dinner, give you a museum tour, please you with a tequila shot, and just when you’re feeling all happy and carefree, they guide you straight into a jewelry store.

Visit Santa Prisca

The Church of Santa Prisca is the most famous landmark in Taxco. It’s a beautiful Baroque church that was built in the 17th century by José de la Borda, a wealthy silver miner. The church is decorated with intricate silverwork, and the interior is absolutely stunning. It is worth seeing for the beautiful paintings and sculptures. There is also a bell tower that you can climb for stunning views of the city. The climb is 130 steps, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes 🙂

Take the cable car up to El Cristo

El Cristo is a giant statue of Jesus Christ, which is a 20-meter-tall (66-foot-tall) statue of Jesus Christ that overlooks the city. You can take the cable car up to the statue for stunning views of the city. The ride up the cable car takes about 10 minutes. There is also a walking trail that leads up to El Cristo, but the cable car is a much more scenic option. The views from the top are simply breathtaking, and it’s a great way to get some exercise and see the city from a different perspective.

Shop for silver

Taxco is known for its silver, so be sure to do some shopping while you’re there. You can find everything from jewelry to home decor to religious artifacts made from silver. There are many different shops to choose from, so you’re sure to find something that you love.

But a word of caution, my friends, as you venture into the silver stores of Taxco, be prepared for a delightful trap. It seems that every store owner has a secret weapon up their sleeve – a free shot of tequila! So, while you indulge in the world of silver, remember to pace yourself and keep your wits about you. After all, you don’t want to wake up the next morning with a bag full of impulsive purchases.

Don’t be afraid to get lost

One of the best things about Taxco is wandering around the narrow streets and getting lost in the maze of alleyways. You’re sure to discover some hidden gems that you wouldn’t find if you just followed the tourist trail. For example, you can find artisan markets, where visitors can find various crafts, including silver jewelry, textiles, ceramics, and more. These markets offer an opportunity to immerse oneself in the local culture and find unique souvenirs.

Taxco is known for its vibrant festivals and traditions

The Holy Week celebrations, featuring religious processions and elaborate displays, attract visitors from far and wide. The processions are the highlight of Holy Week in Taxco. They are a moving and impressive sight, and they are a great way to experience the religious traditions of Mexico. Holy Week is a popular time to visit Taxco, so be sure to book your accommodations early, especially if you’re visiting during the peak season. There are many special dishes that are served during Holy Week in Taxco. Be sure to try some of the local specialties, such as capirotada (a bread pudding with dried fruit and nuts) and bacalao a la vizcaína (a codfish stew).

One thing that struck me about Taxco is the unhurried rhythm of life. Here, time slows down, allowing both residents and visitors to savor the little joys that abound. The plazas and parks provide tranquil oases where people gather to chat, soak up the atmosphere, and observe the ebb and flow of daily life. Picture yourself sitting at a sidewalk café, sipping on a steaming cup of freshly brewed coffee, indulging in local delicacies, and engaging in leisurely conversations with friendly locals who eagerly share stories of the city’s past. It’s these moments that create lasting memories and make you feel right at home.
