Why This American Couple Headed to Mexico to Find Their Dream Home
As an American moving to Mexico, As I stepped off the plane, I could feel the excitement in the air. The vibrant culture and colorful architecture of Mexico had always captured my heart. But this time, I wasn’t just on vacation – I was on a mission to uncover the best living options for my clients who are seeking to move to Mexico.
My adventure in Mexico began with the warmth of the Mexican sun enveloping me. It takes usually several days to adjust to the new climate and environment after the flight, especially when you are coming from a chilly Canadian winter to a warm and sunny city located in the high-altitude region of the Sierra Gorda in El Bajío, Central Mexico.
The first priority on my to-do list was to visit the local immigration office to renew my three-year residency permit. As I arrived at the office in Queretaro, I was greeted by people queuing up at the secured entry gate. The queue was a true representation of the city’s cosmopolitan vibe. People of different nationalities and ages, all eager to extend their stay in this beautiful city.
As an international lifestyle consultant, I am always curious to learn about people’s stories and what brought them to this place, so I was delighted to chat with some fellow expats.
That’s when I met Lea, a young woman from California who had recently relocated to Queretaro with her boyfriend. She shared with me the pain of how her once-lovely hometown had become a place of fear and danger. Lea had grown up in Long Beach, but the once-pleasurable beach had become a source of anxiety, as it was no longer safe to enjoy.
The city had become overrun with homelessness, crime, and drug addiction. She told me how unsafe she had felt walking the streets, even during the day, and how her lifestyle had drastically changed over the years. Lea had been working from home during the COVID closures, and while she had enough clients to keep her busy, the thought of spending all day cooped up at home was unbearable. Her social life had dwindled, with many of her friends either leaving California or becoming less sociable. She felt trapped, unable to continue living in a place where she no longer felt safe or happy.
That’s when her boyfriend, Sean, got the opportunity to extend his business to Mexico and obtain residency there. Lea decided to join him on the search for a new, safe place to enjoy life.
After relocating to Queretaro, they were pleasantly surprised by how clean and safe the city was. Lea finally felt a sense of freedom she hadn’t experienced in years, and the expat community here welcomed her with open arms.
It was clear that she was still processing the pain of leaving behind the life she had known in California, but also how happy she is staying in Mexico, surrounded by natural beauty, like-minded community, adventure, and the freedom to live life on their own terms.
But their adventure is far from over. Lea and Sean shared with me their plans to continue exploring the world and finding their dream home in different countries. They have already started making plans to travel to other destinations such as Europe, Asia, and South America, to explore the unique culture, landscapes, and lifestyles each place has to offer.
